Rich and Flavorful Dal Makhani Recipe

Dal Makhani

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup black lentils (urad dal)
  • 1/2 cup kidney beans (rajma)
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, minced
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon Kasuri Methi (dried fenugreek leaves)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds, roasted
  • Chopped fresh coriander leaves, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the black lentils and kidney beans, then soak in enough water to cover for at least 6 hours or overnight.
  2. Drain the soaked lentils and beans and add them to a large saucepan along with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to low. Simmer until the lentils and beans are tender, about 30 minutes.
  3. In a separate pan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and wait until they crackle.
  4. Add the chopped onion and fry until golden brown. Add the minced garlic and ginger and continue to fry for another minute.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, green chili, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Stir to combine and cook until the tomatoes have broken down and the mixture is thick, about 5 minutes.
  6. Transfer the tomato mixture to the saucepan with the cooked lentils and beans. Stir to combine and cook for another 5 minutes.
  7. Crush the kasuri methi in your hands and add it to the pan. Stir in the heavy cream and continue to cook until the dal is creamy and heated through.
  8. Serve the Dal Makhani hot, garnished with roasted cumin seeds and chopped fresh coriander leaves. Serve with rice or naan bread.
